Becoming Like a Child

Youth Aflame - 4-11-99

Matthew 18:1-4

Ask:

Why become like a child? What did Jesus mean by this?
*After a little discussion, give the following points.

Why should we become like a child?

1. HUMILITY

-Never wants to push forward for themselves.

-Do not wish for prominence or sovereignty.

-Does not strive for 1st place all the time.

-Instinctive humility. (Shy, and quiet in front of others)

**Give any examples that apply.

2. DEPENDENCE

-dependence is perfectly natural.

-Doesn’t try to face life alone or try to choose own destiny.

-Perfectly content with depending on those who love and care for them.

**Give examples that apply or explain more in depth.

3. TRUST

-Because instinctually dependent, they instinctually trust parents to meet their needs.

-They don't try to buy their own food, clothes, or maintain the home, yet they never doubt that food and clothing will be provided and the home will be clean and safe.

**Give examples that apply.

-When we are children we set out on journeys planning to pay no fee and just having trusted in our parents.

-We need humility to fellow man (attitude of Christ) and dependence and Trust on God that He will meet our needs and will always be there for us. (Don't lean on our own understanding!)

CHILD LIKE FAITH BELIEVES GOD WITHOUT QUESTIONING – NO HESITATION AT ALL!

What traits should we not have?

1. Rebelliousness: Jesus said, “If you love me, you will obey my commandments.” (Read John 14:23-24)

2. Fits of jealousy; temper tantrums; SELFISHNESS!

This is the only area in the Word of God where Jesus wanted us to be like a child, growth and maturity are otherwise a must!

Child->Us Parents->God

(End with a challenge to become like a child!)
